The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on political parties and their candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections, following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Sultan made the appeal on Thursday after meeting the president, urging political actors to prioritise peace and stability as preparations for the elections continue.
“We need peaceful campaigns by everybody, and we pray to Almighty Allah to grant us peace and stability in our country as we go in for elections,” he told State House correspondents after the meeting.
He also expressed hope that the country would experience peace throughout the electoral process.
The meeting took place as political parties and candidates prepare for the next general elections, with the conduct of campaigns remaining an important aspect of the electoral process.
The Sultan’s appeal calls on political actors to exercise restraint and avoid conduct that could threaten national peace during the electioneering period.
However, the Presidency had not publicly disclosed the purpose of the Sultan’s visit or the issues discussed during the private meeting as of the time of reporting. The Sultan’s comments to journalists focused on the need for peaceful campaigns and stability ahead of the elections.
