Tinubu says Sultan’s leadership has strengthened religious harmony in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has credited the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, with promoting religious tolerance and strengthening relations between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria as the monarch marks 20 years on the throne.

The president said the Sultan’s leadership had contributed to national unity, peace and development, describing him as an influential voice for religious harmony.

In a congratulatory message issued on Monday, Mr Tinubu said the Sultan had preserved the heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate while using his position to promote peaceful coexistence.

“Twenty years ago, you ascended the throne with humility, courage, and a profound sense of duty,” the president said.

He added that the monarch had transformed the traditional institution into an instrument for peace, unity and national development.

Mr Tinubu described the Sultan as a moral authority, a bridge between faiths and a voice of moderation, noting that his counsel had remained valuable to leaders across the country.

The president also commended the monarch’s role as co-chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, saying his leadership had helped Christians and Muslims find common ground.

He said the Sultan’s commitment to religious tolerance had helped make Nigeria’s religious diversity a source of strength rather than division.

Mr Tinubu further praised the monarch’s advocacy for peace in northern Nigeria and the Sahel, as well as his support for education, particularly for the girl-child, farmers, public health and vulnerable people.

He said the Sultan’s two decades on the throne reflected a commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.
