The Commandant-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has declared that he will not campaign for any politician ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, saying he is not a politician.
Daurawa made the declaration in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Saturday, October 24, amid discussions over the involvement of Islamic scholars in partisan politics. His position comes days after his name appeared on the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign advisory committee list in Kano State.
The committee, announced by the Kano APC leadership, includes prominent political figures and Islamic scholars as part of preparations for the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.
In his message, Daurawa said he hoped that whoever would emerge victorious would be a leader committed to justice, compassion for the poor and the protection of citizens’ rights.
He also prayed for leaders who would prioritise the welfare of the people over personal interests and govern with honesty, trustworthiness and consciousness of Allah.
Although Daurawa did not directly address his inclusion on the APC committee list, his declaration that he would not campaign for any politician signals his stated position on participating in political campaigns.
His name was included alongside that of Sheikh Abdullahi Saleh Pakistan, the immediate past chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, and other Islamic scholars on the Kano APC campaign advisory committee.
Daurawa has previously urged Nigerians to judge political candidates by their competence, records and capacity to deliver good governance rather than their religious identities.
Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa in August, the Islamic scholar argued that elections should focus on candidates’ ability to serve the public rather than whether they are Muslims or Christians.
He also called for peaceful participation in the electoral process and urged Nigerians to avoid political violence and hostility.
